Press Release:

Absorption of Perry Scientific Is Completed by Pennsylvania Firm

An article in the 8/3/09 issue of the San Diego Business Journal

Perry Scientific, San Diego’s oldest preclinical outsourcing specialist, became part of Exton, Penn.-based Absorption Systems last month in a deal that creates a 100-employee contract research organization.

Terms were not revealed. Absorption Systems CEO Patrick Dentinger says the agreement gives Absorption its missing piece — expertise in toxicology research.

“A lot of the work we’d be sending off to other companies now will just be performed there,” he said.

Absorption Systems focuses on research concerning the absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion, or ADME properties, of small molecules. Pharmaceutical firms and biotech companies partner with the company to help advance drug candidates to the point of human testing and ultimately regulatory approval.

As more biotechs go “virtual” and outsource pieces of their research, Dentinger said he expects to capture additional business. It helps that the company now operates in the West Coast, he added, providing a sense of security for clients nearby.

The combined company could add an additional 10 employees to its 24-employee San Diego site in the next six to nine months, according to Dentinger.

“We’re expecting that site to grow rather rapidly,” he said.
